Heritage Trust. The Black River Hospital serves the population of St. Elizabeth, parts of St. James, Westmoreland and Manchester. It is a type"C" hospital with a bed capacity of 60, bed complement of 97 and over one hundred percent occupancy. Black River Hospital is part of the Southern Regional Health Authority with its' Regional Office in Mandeville, Manchester. Services offered include - medical, surgery, gynaecology, obstetrics, paediatric, twenty-four hour accident and emergency services, emergency ambulance services, outpatient clinics, sickle cell clinic, high risk clinic and psychiatric care. There is also a well equipped theatre which offered both emergency and booked surgery. Diagnostic and therapeutic services are: - Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy and most recently ultra-sonography. Black River Hospital receives referrals ftom Community Health Service, eg. Health centres and private doctors. Referring hospitals are:- Mandeville, Cornwall Regional, Kingston Public, University of the West Indies, Bustamante Children and National Chest Hospitals. Aim The hospital aims to offer high quality medical care which is accessible, acceptable, affordable and efficient. Objectives To ensure that eighty percent (80%) of all patients admitted to hospital are treated and discharged or rehabilitated home within 4-5days. To achieve ninety percent (90%) of collectible fees from all patients seen or admitted to hospital (except the exempt categories). To reduce the patients waiting time for out patients from three hours to at least one hour. However, emergency cases are seen and dealt with as soon as they are presented. To investigate all complaints to the hospital within 7 to 10 days. To reduce overcrowding on the wards in order to ensure high quality patient care. To maintain the appropriate staff complement at all times in order to provide effective and efficient service. To improve security measure within the establishment by securing security contract as presently this task is carried out by porters who are not trained for such duties. Achievements 1. To maintain the reduction in the average days spent in hospital from 5-7 days to 4-5 days. 2. Introduction of ultra-sonic investigation which has greatly reduced the need for patients to remain in hospital until this could be made available to them through private doctors. 3. Introduction of ECG investigation following training of all doctors and some nursing personnels. Again this has contributed to the reduction inpatients stay in hospital. 4. To achieve a face lift for the entire hospital by June 2002. 5. To introduce the Patient Administrative System (PAS) into the hospital by 2002. STAFFING Medical |
